On September 18th, 2010 my sister, Liz, my brother’s girlfriend, Kendall and I pulled up our spandex pants and tutu’s and headed down to ESPN Zone in downtown Disney for the Season 4 Wipeout open call. For a few weeks before, I tried to talk the rest of my huge family into auditioning with us, but it ended up being the three of us. The 3-woman wolfpack. And I couldn’t wait, I was so excited. Buuuuut I had to wait. We had to, for a good 4 hours to be exact, in a line full of other crazies like ourselves… But it was awesome. We made friends with people in line, with others walking by just spending the day at Disney… I somehow got myself into a dance-off with a toddler who was walking by and liked our tutus, and LOST to her in front of everyone (what, the girl had moves!!) But nonetheless we actually had a lot of fun. Of course we did, it was Wipeout!!!

Round 1: Be Yourself …As a Nut Job.

Our interviews were maybe 20 seconds. They pulled groups of us up, had us go around and answer the same couple of questions each (Where are you from? What do you do? What would you do if you won the $50,000? and others like those). They told us to be ourselves and not try to be someone else, but at the same time, answer the questions like a total nut… like it was the most exciting thing that ever happened to you, which we did. :) After everyone in the group answered, they either sent you through or sent you home. Some groups, no one made it through. Others, almost all of them. In our group, just the 3 of us got lucky. Maybe it was the tutus, maybe we’re just awesome…. I don’t know how they decided. But the wolfpack stayed strong!! They gave us the same date and time for round 2 – individual, on-camera interviews.

Round 2: Have a Special Talent …And Added Support if It’s Jumping

I was terrified. Liz and Kendall said they were nervous too, but they didn’t look it. I really thought I couldn’t compete with the 2 of them, let alone thousands of others that probably got through! But the 3 of us waited to get called in anyway, along with some other hopefuls.
Side note:
While we waited we struck up conversation with Molly, AKA The Cheeseball Chick! …who FLEW IN from Minnesota for the second time to be there! Pretty amazing…Who knew we would end up making it AND be on the same episode?? So cool. And I’m so glad she made it!

Lights! Camera! Wayyyy Too Much Action

Back to the interview… I’m not gonna lie. I added my chicken cutlets to the mix for this round, thinking they would help me sell my – slow-mo air quotes – personality better! But, then they called us in….

Kendall was on her own while Liz and I were called in together. They interviewed us first individually, then together as a possible sister team for the family episode. One random question after another, thinking on your feet while being as animated and basically psycho as possible, in front of one interviewer and her assistant (who were GREAT by the way, totally hilarious and good at what they do), and a bright light and scary camera… “If you had a nickname on the show what would it be?” “What’s something you absolutely can’t live without?” “What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?” “The Craziest?”

Girl: Do you have any special talents?
Me: Uhhhhhh, I’m told I can jump really high for a white girl!
Girl: Ok, well let’s see it!
Me: okayyyyy… jump, jump, knees to chest, jump, get higher, jump… Crap, my boobs are coming out!! …. jump, jump, oh my god, turning towards the back of the little room to adjust, jump…
Liz: BAAAAAHAHAHAH HER BOOBS ARE FALLING OUT!
Girl: What?? Turn around!!
Me: Yeeeeeaaahhhhh so I’m also really good at embarrassing myself.

Liz and I were both sent through. :) And even better, so was Kendall! Wolfpack!!! We were reunited in a back room with other almost-officially-contestants, where we signed a novel’s worth of paperwork. They told us, the producers were going to review all the tapes and then make their final choices, then give us a call to let us know if/when we would go on. So, we cheersed to beers at TGIFridays, then we were on our way home. Then started the wait to get that last phone call, the one to make it official.

Thankful for A Shot at the Big Balls!!

Just before Thanksgiving I got the call from casting with my episode filming date. SO FREAKING EXCITING. But, for whatever reason, and one I’ll never know or understand, I was the only one who got lucky with the phone call. And that sucked. I was SO excited, but totally feeling horrible at the same time. So before I went to get my physical done, I called up Liz and Kendall and told them I didn’t have to do it if the 3 of us weren’t going to. But, both of them had the same reaction, and put it almost identically:

Sarah, if you don’t do it, you’re a freakin idiot.

Well alright!!!!

Their support meant the world to me. And it’s all I needed to get fired up.

Watch It Tonight!

I can’t believe it’s finally here… filming was back in the end of January and I can’t wait to be able to talk about what happened, after our episode airs tonight. Check your local listings but it’s on ABC at 8:00 PST tonight. Woohoo!!!!!!
